    Aussie Info

Besides being loving and adorable, Aussies are very intersting dogs. Read on to learn more about them.

    Temperment

The Australian Shepherd is an intelligent, active dog with an even disposition; good natured and seldom quarrelsome. During initial meetings, they may be somewhat reserved.

    General Appearance

The Australian Shepherd is a well-balanced dog of medium size and bone. He is attentive and animated, showing strength and stamina combined with unusual agility. Slightly longer than tall, he has a coat of moderate length and coarseness with coloring that offers variety and individuality in each specimen. An identifying characteristic is his naturally bobbed, or docked, tail. In each sex, masculity and femininity is well defined.

    History

The Australian Shepherd most likely originated in the Basque region of the Pyrenees Mountains, between Spain and France. They were, however, dubbed Australian Shepherds because of their association with the Basque shepherds that came to the United States from Australian in the 1800s.

The Australian Shepherd was originally called by many names, including Spanish Shepherds, Pastor Dogs, Bob Tails, Blues, Heelers, New Mexican Shepherds, and California Shepherds.

In 1989, The Australian National Kennel Club granted permission to the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA) to use the name "Australian Shepherd", so long as it was made clear that the breed had not been developed in Australia.
